The hiking meccas Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm and Val Gardena/Grödnertal

To hiking enthusiasts, the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm and the Val Gardena/Grödnertal, both belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage sites with their hundreds of kilometres of well-marked hiking paths and trails, are nothing short of a slice of paradise.

The Hotel Pinei can boast a rare peculiarity: in fact, one could argue it is both a hotel in Castelrotto/Kastelruth and a hotel in Ortisei/St.Ulrich, two of South Tyrol’s most sought after holiday resorts. How is this possible? Our hotel is ideally located between the two villages, on the idyllic Passo Pinei/Panider Sattel. This makes our holiday home a perfect starting point for a number of hiking tours on the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm and in the Dolomites of the Val Gardena/Grödnertal.

Hiking adventures on the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm

The Seiser Alm is Europe's largest plateau and a marvellous example of the uniqueness of South Tyrol’s landscapes. At an altitude ranging from 1,700 to 2,400 metres, hiking on the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm is a healthy, inspiring activity as well as a memorable experience. The rugged peaks that embrace the fragrant meadows enclose a variety of trails from easy to challenging, for every hiker type: families and adventure- seekers, climbing fans and Nordic walkers. Reaching the natural hiking paradises of South Tyrol is easy, too: an efficient bus service runs from the town centres of Ortisei/St. Ulrich and Castelrotto/Kastelruth to the lift facilities or to the bus stop from where the Almbus takes you to your destination, be it the Passo Pinei/Panider Sattel or the Alpe di Siusi. On the many well-signposted paths, which stretch through the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm for a total length of ca. 450 km, you will also get the chance to discover some exciting stories. In fact, many a legend developed here in the Dolomites throughout the centuries, inspired by some of the natural landmarks that still remind of them.

Hiking in the Val Gardena/Grödnertal – in Luis Trenker’s footsteps

Hiking in the Val Gardena/Grödnertal is no less charming than hiking on the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm, with a backdrop of world-famous mountain groups such as Sella, Sassolungo/Langkofel, Cir, Seceda, Odle, Puez and Stevia to name a few. No wonder local star-alpinist Luis Trenker loved these mountains so deeply – one never grows tired of admiring them. You do not need to believe us: see for yourself! Wander through blooming meadows, on well-groomed trails and narrow, secluded paths; stop from time to time and make time to let your eyes sweep over the landscape, breath in the invigorating mountain air and surrender to the feeling of happiness. If you feel you could do with an energy boost, drop by in one of the traditional mountain huts along the way, where you will be treated to a tasty snack in a warm, cosy atmosphere. All the hiking routes in the Val Gardena/Grödnertal, just as those on the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm, are easily reached from the Passo Pinei/Panider Sattel: the bus will take you to the lift facilities or directly to several starting points.

Hiking and climbing on the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm and in the Val Gardena/Gröden

If you are a true, avid mountaineer, you probably will not be content with just hiking in the Dolomites:  you will want to explore the Dolomites “by hand” as well as by foot. Climbing is actually one of the most popular summer activities on the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm and in the Val Gardena/Gröden, with steep cliffs and rewarding via ferratas suitable for all levels of experience and condition, but requiring a certain degree of adventurousness – the most thrilling experiences are definitely not for the faint hearted!
All the tours offer incredible panoramic views, electrifying experiences and fond memories to collect.

We of the Hotel Pinei are passionate hikers and mountaineers ourselves, so we will be delighted to accompany you on guided tours and to provide you with useful pointers about the top tours of the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm and in Val Gardena/ Gröden!

A few tips from our hiking guide, Barbara

Herb farm hiking tour

  • This folkloristic, legend-themed excursion includes a visit to an herb cultivation farm. We walk over the ancient cobbled driveway through the legend-rich Peßtal valley to reach the herb farm Pflegerhof and the village of Sant’Osvaldo/St. Oswald.
  • Level: easy hike, sturdy shoes recommended
  • Altitude difference: 300 m

We take the hotel shuttle at 09:30 a.m. to reach the Lanziner stables, in Telfen. From here we hike through the meadows along the edge of the Laranza/Laranzer forest until the path leads into the woods. We reach the old –and alas a bit worn out− cobbled path and descend through the Peßtal (the “Valley of Evil”), until we reach the Sant’Osvaldo/St. Oswald farms and the paved road. At the signposted crossroads 200 m ahead we take through the meadows towards the herb farm Pflegerhof (2 hours walk to here), where a herbalists will gives us insight into the farming and processing of herbs. We will also get to know the farm’ products. Meanwhile, Raimund will be preparing a snack for us to enjoy in the courtyard, overlooking the magnificent backdrop of the Sciliar/Schlern and the ruins of Castelvecchio/Aichach. After the tasty break, time to get going again: a quiet road leads us to the village centre of Sant’Osvaldo/St. Oswald (0.5 h). Optional: Visit to the Tschötscherhof, an old farmers’ inn with a small rural museum. If you are tired, Raimund will drive you back to the hotel, while if you wish to go back on foot, you can take the path back to Castelrotto/Kastelruth (2.5 hours). If you cannot join the walk, you are invited to visit the herb farm together with Raimund, who will be driving you there.

Hiking tour to Tagusa/Tagusens

  • This excursion allows us to explore the northwestern side of the Castelrotto/Kastelruth municipality: the hamlet of Tagusa/Tagusens and the wood of Bühlen-Brembach.
  • Altitude difference: 500 m from the Passo Pinei/Panider Sattel, 150 m from Schgagul.
  • Level: easy to intermediate, comfortable, sturdy shoes recommended.

We start from the Passo Pinei/Panider Sattel at 09:30 a.m. and follow the path No. 10 through San Michele/St. Michael to the Schgagulerhof (1.5 hours). It is also possible to drive there and park slightly above (the car park is signposted). Rendezvous is at 11.00 a.m. We take the path No. 2 through the Bühlen, a large forest area, to Tagusa/Tagusens. The path is mainly flat, slightly descending towards the last part (from Schgagul to Tagusa/Tagusens 1.5 hours). In Tagusa/Tagusens we stir up childhood memories with a visit to the school museum and to the adjacent church, and then enjoy some rest and a well-deserved snack, kindly provided by Raimund. After our break we take through Tomines/Tamines and Brembach – first flat trail, then some gentle ups and downs − back to Schgagul (2 hours). If the way back is too much for you to tackle, you can drive back with Raimond.

Hiking tour on the farm path

  • This hike will introduce us to the farmers' way of life through well-preserved cultural and artistic monuments and a varied natural and cultural landscape.
  • Level: intermediate to difficult.
  • Distance: 8 km

We start from the Passo Pinei/Panider Sattel at 09:30 a.m.; the hotel shuttle drives us to Presule/Prösels, near Fiè allo Sciliar/Völs am Schlern, where we take the farm path through coniferous and shrubs woodland, admiring the interesting natural and cultural landscapes. We take a break near the southernmost farm, the Gemoanerhof (a 130 m descent and a short climb − 2 hours to reach this point). Raimund will bring us a snack to top up our energy tank. Those who wish to end the walk here can drive back to Presule/Prösels with Raimund and possibly visit the castle and/or the powder tower there. Those who are ready to hike their way back have to face a 140 m climb, after which the path, lined with ancient and modern farms, negotiates its way through a wine-farming area. As we wander on the left side of the Tiers/Tierser valley we can admire the Catinaccio/Rosengarten mountain range in the background. We go past the village of Aica di Fiè/Völser Aicha on a path and then over a suspension bridge to our final destination: the Katharina-Kirchlein, a Romanesque church dating back to the 13th century with interesting frescoes of St. Catherine (2 hours). From here, we take the bus back to Presule/Prösels.

Hiking tour on the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm – the Way of the Cross

  • The Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm offers hiking trails galore. One of these leads is an old cobbled path where a Way of the Cross was built, which ends at a small chapel.
  • Level: intermediate.

We start from the Passo Pinei/Panider Sattel at 09:00 a.m. and take the hotel shuttle to the valley station of the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm lift (or to the check point). From there, first we take the path that leads to Bagni di Ratzes/Bad Ratzes, then we turn off onto path No. 4 to the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm (on the ancient path) until we reach the crossroads. The view is magnificent. We walk past Gstatsch and reach the Frommer Bild chapel, to find ourselves at the valley station of the Spitzbühl lift (3 hours, altitude difference 700 m). If you so wish, you may join the walk directly at the check point (at the beginning of the crossroads, 2 hours, altitude difference 500 m). Now it is only 200 metres to the Spitzbühl hut at the top station (1 hour). We invite all guests to hike with us; however, you are free to drive with Raimund or reach the valley station of the Spitzbühl lift by car. Our destination is our hotel’s private hut, which is located a 5-minute walk from the Spitzbühl hut. Raimund will be waiting for us there with a well-deserved snack. After we have rested and enjoyed the panorama, you can either drive back with Raimund or go by foot – you can decide on the spot.

Hiking tour on the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm through the Marinzen towards Spitzbühl − Sciliar/Schlern

We walk to Marinzen (2 hours, altitude difference 300 m); if you prefer a shorter route you can reach Castelrotto/Kastelruth by car or bus and take the lift to Marinzen (rendezvous at 11:00 a.m.). From there we take the path No. 12 to the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm and Spitzbühl (2 hours, altitude difference 400 m). The last 200 altitude metres can be tackled with the Spitzbühl lift. It is also possible to take the cable car to the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm and walk to the Spitzbühl from there (1 hour). Alternatively, you can reach the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm by shuttle. Raimund will be waiting for us at the hut with a well-deserved snack and we will get to enjoy some rest and panoramic views. If you have some juice left, you can get back to Castelrotto/Kastelruth or the Passo Pinei/Panider Sattel on foot. Alp roses hiking tour

  • Level: easy to intermediate
  • Walking time: ca. 3.5 + 1.5 hours
  • Altitude difference: totalling 400 m

We start at 09:00 a.m. at the Passo Pinei/Panider Sattel. The hotel shuttle bus will take us to the valley station of the lift that will take us to the Alpe di Siusi. There we take the Hans and Paula Steger path, which owes its name to the ski-legends and pioneers of mountaineering Hans Steger and Paula Wiesinger. The path will lead us to the Rosa Alpina/Almrosen hut, where we will stop for a snack. We will then continue to the Molignon/Mahlknecht hut − who knows, maybe we will even get to see some marmots (altitude difference 200 metres). We walk on downhill to the Tirler hut, a great favourite of both tourists and locals that was declared "South Tyrol’s most beautiful mountain hut" in 2009. We then followed the paved road to Saltria. Those who are tired can take the bus back to Compaccio/Compatsch. The others will continue uphill back to our starting point (200 m altitude), take the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm cable car back to Siusi/Seis and hop on the bus or the hotel shuttle to get back to the Hotel Pinei.

Hike along the Friedrich August path

  • Level: easy mountain path, sturdy footwear recommended
  • Walking time: about 4 hours
  • Altitude difference: 313 m (downhill: 830 m)

We start from the Passo Pinei/Panider Sattel at 8:20 a.m. (at the bus stop to Ortisei/St. Ulrich). Once in Ortisei/St. Ulrich we take the 8:46 a.m. bus to the Sella Pass (bus tickets available at the hotel). After a relatively short climb from the Sella Pass (2,200 m) we reach the Friedrich August hut, where the path begins. The Sassolungo/Langkofel, the Punta delle Cinque Dita/Fünffingerspitze, the Grohmann peak and the Sassopiatto/Plattkofel tower above us, with the glorious sight of the Sella massif beaming from the east, and the Marmolada and the "Pale di San Martino" from the south.
The trail leads conveniently to the Sasso Piatto/ Plattkofel hut (2,300 m, 2 to 2 ½ hours), where we can enjoy a wide panorama to the Dolomites and an invigorating break before continuing  through the Zallinger and Sattler huts to Saltria (1 hour ½). If everyone is up for it, we can march on through grassy slopes on volcanic subsoil for another hour. From the Mahlknechtjoch we can either reach the Compaccio/Compatsch gondola (2 hours) or get back from Saltria to Compaccio/Compatsch by bus, and descend to Siusi/Seis by cable car to take the bus to Passo Pinei/Panider Sattel.
